Political Cartoons
As more and more immigrants began to enter the United States, different laws were put into place which caused debate among U.S. citizens. Political Cartoons were very popular during this era and were used to express opinions about immigration and immigration laws.
- In 1798 the Naturalization Act authorized the president to deport any immigrants that were "dangerous to the peace and safety of the United States."
- In 1882 the Chinese Exclusion Act restricted immigration of Chinese laborers for 10 years.
- After 1917, immigrants entering the United States had to pass a literacy test.
- In 1921 the Emergency Quota Act limited the number of immigrants from any country to 3% of those already in the US from that country as per the 1910 census.
- The 1924 Immigration Act imposed first permanent numerical limit on immigration.
