- From present-day upstate New York
- Was also known as the Five Nations: Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca.
- The Five Nations are believed to have emerged as distinct tribes by the 15th century or earlier. Each had a distinct territory and function within the League
- The Iroquois women were called clan mothers and had great political power
- The Iroquois Confederacy is the decentralized political and diplomatic entity that emerged in response to European colonization, and still exists today.
- The Iroquois were a mix of farmers, fishers, gatherers and hunters.
- The main crops they cultivated are corn, beans are squash.
- These crops were called the "three sisters" and are considered special gifts from the Creator.
